Symptoms of Menopause
Menopause is a natural component of women’s health. It is that stage in a woman’s life when she is heading towards the end of her menstrual periods. The usual age for menopause is around in the 50s but it can happen to different individuals at different time;, for instance, some women may experience menopause as early as in their 40s while for others, their menstrual periods may not stop until women are in their 60s.
The onset of menopause is brought on by changes in hormone levels in a woman’s body. These changes are triggered when the production of the hormones estrogen and progesterone ceases. Symptoms of menopause start to become apparent before menopause actually sets in. During the time that precedes menopause, many women experience a growing irregularity in their menstrual periods. This duration is known as perimenopause when menstrual periods often stop for some time before starting again. The only way of ensuring that a woman has actually reached menopause is if menstrual periods are not experienced for one whole year without any other reason such as an illness attributed to their absence.
Symptoms of menopause:
Symptoms experienced during perimenopause are caused by fluctuations in hormone levels which can bring on hot flashes, irregular menstrual periods, trouble sleeping, vaginal and urinary problems as well as mood changes. Some of the symptoms like hot flashes can be highly bothersome where women may feel sudden heat in different parts of the body and start to sweat profusely. At night time these may turn into night sweats where women start to perspire excessively during sleep and then experience extreme fatigue during the day.
The female hormone estrogen is also responsible for the health of the urinary tract in women. A lower level of estrogen could lead to a greater susceptibility to vaginal and urinary infections and also cause a condition known as urinary stress incontinence where it becomes very hard to hold urine in the bladder consistently or cause some to leak out when pressure is applied during sneezing, coughing or even laughing.
Another symptom that is typically associated with menopause is that of mood swings. Women may experience recurrent crying spells, fell highly irritable and exhibit unpredictable mood changes. At the same time menopause may also impact a woman’s feelings about sex. Some women may experience less arousal or show less interest in having intercourse as the act itself could become physically more uncomfortable.
While osteoporosis could affect anyone, women who have undergone menopause are more vulnerable. In this condition bones become more brittle and are prone to easier damage and individuals may also lose some height.
Other menopause related symptoms can include memory changes like increased forgetfulness or less retention and focus. Physically, women may see their waist enlarging, their muscles and joints becoming stiff and an overall increase in their chances of getting certain health conditions.
With sensible lifestyle changes like eating healthy, being active and getting screened regularly, women can help regulate symptoms of menopause.
After menopause women do not have shifts in female hormone levels. Instead their hormones will stay at low levels.
